Reatta Owners Journal

It is common for the horn buttons to break or get loose on 1990 and 1991 model Reattas. Below are instructions for replacing the horn buttons.

Disconnect the negative battery cable and leave it disconnected. Wait at least 30 minutes to allow the capacitor in the airbag system to discharge. Leaving the battery disconnected overnight would be even better. Always be cautious when working around airbags to avoid personal injury.

  1. Loosen the 4 screws from the back of a steering wheel with a #30 Torx driver. When there is no tension on the screws they are free from the back.

  2. Pull the horn pad towards you about 2-3" to be sure the screws are free from the wheel.

  3. Turn the horn pad on edge to remove the horn electrical lead. The horn lead removes from the column with a slight push in and then a quarter turn to release it from it's holder.

  4. Turn the horn pad completely over. You will see two #15 Torx screws on either end of the horn pad holding the horn buttons in place. (total of 4 screws.)

  5. Remove the 4 screws holding the buttons in place and in push on the wire lead that goes to the horn button to "push" out the button.

  6. Pull apart the solderless connector and install your new horn button.

Install is reverse of removal.
Easy task I rate it a 2-3 on a scale of 10. It's about a 10-15 minute project.
