The only reason I could think of to rebuild the engine at that mileage would be to increase the performance. Beyond that, the only thing I find that may need replacement before 200k miles would be the timing chain. After that, regular maintenance is all it needs. Peripheral items like the water pump, alternator and such, is like any other brand, they do have a lifespan.
this car just recently sold on Cars and Bids and seems like fair market value right now for a decent lower mileage Reatta. In reality low mileage isn’t everything with these cars. Good condition and all systems functioning is where the real value is.
As most have mentioned before, you really can't kill a 3800 engine if regular maintenance around them is kept up (i.e. sensors, timing chain, alt, a/c, fluids, etc, etc.). Daves89 on this forum has a few Reattas that have well over 200K miles.
Thanks Ronnie. I always look in the how to guides often, and did use the headlight assembly removal guide. Just a fun and involved process is all. I did not find the motor rebuild in this list below. The wire routing I completely glossed over., but the good news is that I did run them correctly based on clearances.
On my 90 convertible, the lower right bolt in the picture below is nearly impossible to get at, there is another bracket in front of it on both sides, limiting clearance in front of it to about 1". Only way to get at it was with a box end wrench and remove by hand.
As always, this site is a tremendous resource!
Pretty unusual to have a knock on a 3800. I would take a very close look at the harmonic balancer on the front of the crank. Not uncommon to have the rubber start to fail and it sounds just like a knock deep in the engine at idle. Usually goes away if revved up. Sure way to check is remove the belt and let it idle. You can also feel the face of the balancer or get a look through the wheelwell. Darn good looking car. Sort of a head scratcher that it needed an oil pan after cam sensor repairs plus if they disassembled the front of the engine for the cam magnet, how it now has a knock???
