1988 door speaker replacement

So I got my radio module working and I replaced the rear speakers they were shot the speakers were rotted out sounds great now so I’m going to replace the fronts do I have to take the door panels off to replace the speakers?

I've always taken the door panel off and swap speakers that way. However a guy named Barney says that you can pull out the bottom and by putting a small 2x4 block between the inner door panel and the door should give you enough clearance to make the swap.

 For what it's worth I use a Kicker powered subwoofer and the rear speakers only. 

 I think the sound is great that way, but that's just my opinion...
